Pakistan floods 2022: Flash flood appeal increased from $160 million to $816 million.

United Nations, increased the flash flood appeal for 2022 Pakistan floods from $160 million to $816 million. Initially, Pakistan placed an appeal of $160 million to counter the devastating effects of the flood. This value was evaluated after close consideration and collaboration between the government of Pakistan and the UN.

The UN decided to upscale the aid given to Pakistan due to the miserable sanitary & health conditions in the flood-affected areas. There's a high chance of a massive outbreak of water-borne diseases in these flood-affected areas. These will eventually lead to countless and long-lasting fatalities

"the prevailing wave of diseases in the flood-ravaged areas could inflict many more deaths among flood victims, particularly the children who are the most vulnerable segment" UN resident coordinator, Julien Harneis remarked.

Floodwaters that have accumulated across hundreds of square kilometers (miles) may take months to recede, resulting in widespread occurrences of skin and eye infections, diarrhea, malaria, typhoid, and dengue fever.

The crisis had struck Pakistan at an immensely challenging time. With its economy in turmoil and supported by IMF loans, it lacks the resources to deal with the long-term impacts of the floods. That's why Pakistan has repeatedly appealed to the international community to help her during such a crucial time.

Floods driven by strong monsoon rains and melting glaciers & then a heat wave in Pakistan seemed like the best recipe for catastrophe. Pakistan's floods have killed over 1,700 people since June 14. Pakistan estimates the damage at $30 billion, and both the government and the UN have blamed the disaster on climate change. According to their narrative, Pakistan contributes less than 1% of global carbon emissions yet it's one of the most affected countries by climate change

The Floods Response Plan was devised in joint coordination between the Pakistani government and the United Nations, and it focuses on providing necessary support to vulnerable individuals impacted by the unprecedented floods. It adds to the government's broader reaction to Pakistan's recent climate-related floods.
